Celebrating Two Centuries Since Marist Arrive in Belley

A joyful celebration marked the 200th anniversary of the arrival of the Marist Sisters and Fathers in Belley.

The 200th Anniversary of the arrival of the Marist Sisters and Fathers in Belley was truly a day to remember! Celebrations began at the Lamartine Institute with a presentation by Brother Faustino SM on the history of Jean-Claude Colin and the early priests who were housed in the school upon their arrival in Belley.

Our chaplain, Father Philippe-Marie Kontzler, prepared a wonderful meal which was blessed by Bishop Pascal Roland. A representative from the mayor’s office spoke warmly of the joy and humour shared by the Marist communities gathered around the tables.

The school graciously offered the use of its cafeteria and a meeting room. A pilgrimage group, accompanied by Fr Mark Walls and members of the Justice and Peace Committee of Belley, offered invaluable assistance in organizing the day.

Members from all branches of the Marist Family were present: eight Marist Fathers—including two from Holland and two from Paris—seven Marist Brothers (four from the Hermitage, who animated the Mass presided by Mgr Roland), and Brothers Felui and Maurice, who shared a video of the celebrations the following day.

Several SMSM Sisters came from Lyons to join the celebration. Members of the Marist Laity and associates of the Marist Sisters also participated. Sr Marie-Thérèse shared the story of the Sisters’ arrival in Belley.

Over seventy people attended the Mass, including several residents of Bon Repos. As the day drew to a close, everyone gathered on the terrace to toast the occasion—with joyful hearts, gratitude, Cerdon wine, and freshly baked treats!
