Gisèle Marquis - Canada
20/03/1928 - 22/07/2021
Sr Gisèle Marquis, the eldest of the Marist Sisters of the Canadian Unit, passed away on July 22, 2021, at the Edmundston Regional Hospital.
Born March 20, 1928 in St Léonard (Parent), she was the daughter of the late Amable Marquis and the late Oliva Michaud.
Having grown up in the place of foundation of the Marist Sisters in Canada, it was from her native parish that Sr. Gisèle embarked for France to be formed for religious life near Paris. As her Marist and teaching life has witnessed for many years, she never regretted this choice of life, daring as it was at the time.
Her long career in education began in 1952 and made her known and appreciated in the schools of the Madawaska region: Ste Anne, St Léonard Parent, Verret, Edmundston, Rivière-Verte. In addition, Sr Gisèle often assumed positions of responsibility in the service of the Congregation.
She was also involved in the parish (church services, visits to the sick and the elderly and support for families). Among other things, Mont Assomption took advantage of her kindness during her assiduous visits to her hundred-year-old mother. From 2007, Sr. Gisèle was part of the Marist community of Edmundston where gardening and regular hikes in Grand Falls through Ste Anne benefited many people who appreciated her discreet presence, her encouragement, her joy of sharing the Good News “in the manner of Mary”.
When her health deteriorated, Sr Gisèle courageously agreed to go to Foyer Ste Anne, her last community, but not the least - with the good care she received there. Until the eve of her jubilee feast, she continued her mission as a "bearer of hope", sharing her positive outlook on life and people.
With her, we sing MAGNIFICAT for 70 beautiful and fruitful years of Marist life and for her fidelity in radiating the joy and the peace of her vocation.
The funeral of Sr Gisèle Marquis and Sr Rita Daigle will take place on August 17, 2021 at the Church of Ste Anne du Madawaska at 11 a.m. and the interment in St Léonard-Parent, their home parish.
