THANKSGIVING MASS IN HONOUR OF THE CENTENARY OF CARDINAL HYACINTHE THIANDOUM
Hyacinthe Thiandoum was born on February 2, 1921 and was ordained a priest on April 28, 1949 in Senegal.
Two years after the independence of Senegal, Monsignor Hyacinthe Thiandoum was appointed Archbishop of Dakar in February 1962, at the age of 41, succeeding Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre. A few months later, in October 1962, the Vatican II Council opened.
He was one of the great figures of the Catholic Church in Africa and the world, actor of the Vatican II Council (1962-1965), close to Popes Paul VI and John Paul II, advocate of Islamic-Christian dialogue and the first Senegalese cardinal.
To honor the centenary of his birth, Dr Martin Pascal TINE, Ambassador of Senegal to the Holy See organised a thanksgiving mass on September 25, 2021,in the church Santa Maria in Portico in Campitelli in Rome. The mass waspresided by Cardinal Peter Turkson, Prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development. In his homily, Monsignor Benjamin Ndiaye, Archbishop of Dakar, recalled the legacy left to us by Cardinal Thiandoum. By accepting his mission as Bishop, Monsignor Thiandoum devoted himself to building an African Church on Senegalese soil, counting on its capacities for self-determination. He will be in the lineage of those African pastors whose mission was to preach "an authentically African and Christian church".
Representatives of African diplomatic missions, African men and women religious and the Senegalese Catholic and Muslim community living in Italy were present at the celebration. The community of the Marist Sisters was represented at this celebration by Vivienne and Sylvette. At the end of the celebration, a Kora, a Senegalese musical instrument was offered to Cardinal Turkson.
