Volunteer Ireland Awards 2025

“She doesn’t just teach English; she builds a relationship”

Sr Bernadette McManus received special recognition in the Social Inclusion and Community Support category for her Befriending Ministry to refugees and survivors of torture from war-torn countries at the National Volunteer Awards event in Dublin in early December. She volunteers with Spirasi, a programme run by the Spiritans dedicated to supporting survivors of torture. Sr Ann Wrynn and one of Bernadette’s refugee students from Zimbabwe accompanied her to the celebration.

The Volunteer Ireland Awards are the major annual initiative celebrating volunteers across the country. Among them is the Social Inclusion and Community Support Award, which honours those who help make society welcoming and inclusive for all by strengthening their communities, supporting people at risk of exclusion, and fostering a sense of connection and belonging.

We were delighted to hear that Sr Bernadette McManus had been shortlisted for this award in recognition of her work with Spirasi, the National Centre for Survivors of Torture in Ireland. Spirasi supports the rehabilitation of asylum seekers and refugees through a range of medical, therapeutic, and psychosocial services. Sr Bernadette volunteers by providing English language classes and serves as a Befriender, offering companionship and practical support that helps individuals rebuild confidence and integrate into their new community.

For seven years, she has built trusting relationships with survivors of torture, creating a safe and encouraging space for learning. By meeting regularly with her befriendee and accompanying her to Spirasi activities, Sr Bernadette offers steady, compassionate support that fosters confidence, connection, and a true sense of belonging.

Congratulations Bernadette on this recognition and blessings on your ministry!
