February 22 - Feast of St Peter's Chair
A Day to Remember St Peter's Successor
The Feast of St Peter's Chair signifies the unity of the Church founded upon the Apostles. So today, in a particular way, let us hold in prayer our Father Francis, Peter's successor. Let us give thanks for him, a living witness to us of the self-giving love and joy of Jesus. Let us pray God's continued blessings upon him. May he receive every day all that he needs to do as our Shepherd.
Let us also join with Pope Francis in praying for his intention this month: That those who have material, political or spiritual power may resist any lure of corruption.
Gracious God, we thank you for the gift of our Father Francis.
In a world split by violence and hatred,
he reaches out with love to all, especially those most neglected.
Amid our "throw-away" culture
he speaks of minfulness and care of our Common Home.
To those who would exclude others, he pleads for mercy.
For those who feel unworthy,
he offers a welcome with joy and simplicity.
As our Father Francis gives of himself to our Church
and our wider world,
we pray that you will shepherd him always
and give him your grace.
May Mary also accompany him, enfolding him in her mantle of love.
We pray this prayer through Jesus, recognised by St Peter as
the Christ, the Son of the living God.
Amen.
