Marist Pilgrimage to the Basilica of Guadalupe
to celebrate 200 years of the Promise of Fourvière
Marist Sisters, Marist Brothers, Members of the Marist Laity and Marist Fathers celebrated with joy
the Life of Mary, present in the Society of Mary during these 200 years!
... writes Mari Aranda...
Three of us were very happy to take part in this pilgrimage to the Basilica of Guadalupe, organised by the Marist Fathers.
As you know, the Basilica of Guadalupe, is the Marian shrine which has the greatest number of visitors in the world; of course since the Virgin of Guadalupe left her image stamped on the cloak of St Juan Diego in 1531. St John Paul II proclaimed her patroness of the Americas.
So on Saturday 18th June, the Marist Fathers together with people from their parishes, Marist Brothers from both provinces and young people from their schools, and the three of us gathered in Mexico City and walked in pilgrimage the 11km praying, running, walking, singing, joining our 800 voices as Marist Family. We raised our banners high not worrying about the tiredness and the sun.
On arrival at the Basilica, we celebrated the Eucharist presided by the Provincial of the Marist Fathers with others concelebrating. We asked our Mother to confirm us in the gracious choice we had received to live our Marist spirituality in the following of Jesus. We asked that each Marist would live the attitudes we see in the life of Jesus, essential to his disciples: compassion, work on behalf of the least, commitment to the healing of wounds, forgiveness and radical trust, living as Mary lived.
We accepted the Promise of Fourvière as expression of our consecration to the Work of Mary in service of the Reign of God. And finally, the 800 people who had gathered renewed the Promise of Fouviére.
Then we gathered in the De La Salle school nearby to be together, sharing some delicious tacos.
