Making St Brigid’s Crosses - Carrick on Shannon - 1 February 2022
St Brigid is one of the patron saints of Ireland. Our sisters in in Carrick On Shannon made some crosses to celebrate her feast day and share these reflections.
“Today people are becoming more conscious of our planet. It is becoming barren, skies fouled, waters poisoned. Our delicate ecosystems are being destroyed and the pursuit of wealth is causing irreparable damage to the planet. The soul of St Brigid is in the land. In this time of upheaval we turn to her, a woman of the Land to bring faith and healing to our country. “
“Five qualities stand out in St Brigid’s life.
She was
• A woman of Contemplation
• A Homemaker
• A Peacemaker
• A friend of the Poor
• A woman of the Land”
“There is a legend associated with St Brigid’s Cross. Brigid was called to the bedside of a dying pagan chieftan. She sat by his bedside to keep watch during his final hours asked her what she was making and Brigid explained the story of Jesus to him. Before he died the Chieftan became a Christian.”
