Connections through our Congregational Cross

Anne McCabe, currently in Manchester, helped facilitate a Day of Reflection for a group of young people from South India, namely Mangalore and Kerala. In addition to sharing reflections on the Easter readings, Anne introduced the young people to our Marist Sisters' cross.

A week later some of these same young people were on the Salford Diocesan Pilgrimage to Our Lady’s Shrine in Walsingham. They visited our house there and met Marina Brady, who shared some thoughts on the presence of Mary in our lives and the story of Walsingham - she also showed the young people her cross.

Carmel Reynolds happened to be out at the time, but encountered the group later in the day. Before any introduction was made, a few of them said: We know who you are; you are a Marist Sister! Looking at them in amazement, Carmel said, How do you know? They responded in unison by pointing to her cross and saying Because you are wearing your cross with the Marist M!

Reflecting on this incident, Anne reflects: I think Sunday's Gospel reading links in - Jesus’ last and first words to Peter are “Follow me”. We need to hear the same words again and again if they are to have meaning in our lives. The young people will not forget the Marist cross, and their response makes it even more precious to us, Marist Sisters.
