The Meaning of Fourvière Today

As the Bicentenary of the Fourvière Promise approaches, the Marist Senior School at Sunninghill, led by Mr Karl McCloskey, is keeping in mind the meaning of the event for each of us in our time and place. In the Marist E-Bulletin of 27 May 2016 Mr McCloskey reflected as follows:

 "Dare to Dream"

When was the last time you made a pledge (a solemn promise or understanding, an assurance or an oath) to something or someone?

On the 23rd July 1816 twelve young men went into the chapel in Fourviere near Lyons.  To make a pledge and a commitment - to begin the society of Mary.

Through this event the Marist family was born.

In this year we celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the promise of Fourviere.  We are the heirs to the legacy.  In our daily work of teaching, learning, guiding, growing, shaping and nurturing, we join with these 'founders' in their journey.

We embrace the optimism and enthusiasm that led them to make their commitment, equally we seem to discover what inspires us in our own lives in Sunninghill and beyond.

The Marist founders are not confined to the past.  They stand before us and they ask each and every one of us as Marist Educators, Marist Parents and Marist Pupils what is real and what is worthwhile for us to commit ourselves to?

What is it in 2016 that you "dare to dream?"
